When we got moving we had some breakfast and tore down the site as quickly as possible. When the tear down was finished, we grabbed our kit and moved down the mountain. It only took 40 minutes to go down a hill that took three hours to go up.

When we reached the river we moved to the bush and got off the beaten trail. We soon had to cross the large river, so we linked arms and moved across slowly to get to the other side. The river was so cold that we screamed when we got waist deep. The chill of it all kept us from over heating.

We were soon on the home stretch and on our way to the last river crossing. As we were walking through the open field the cattle began to run towards us. The cattle were being herded to the same place we were going so this made our travel a little difficult. As we reached the river we could see the van and soon enough we crossed and got to our van and changed into clean clothes. On the drive back everyone fell asleep and slept till we reached Wanaka. We grabbed our gear and booked it for the vans because we had a long journey to get to Christchurch. After a five-hour drive we had made it back to the YMCA in Christchurch and got settled in and quickly went to bed. Tomorrow we would be on our way back to Vancouver.

––––

January 6, 2010: Dallas Buhr

Today we woke up at 05:45 hours to our breakfast lying out on the table…Mars bars and Kit Kats. Once we were all packed up, we started our tramping trip all the way down Brewster. It was a long, steep tramp which took a lot of caution. We followed the stairway of roots all the way to the bottom. I think it’s safe to say everyone left with a little extra mud on their shorts.

We got to the bottom in about two hours, tramped through the river and into the vans. Our group arrived at the base camp four hours earlier than the other team, so we got nice and clean before our six-hour ride to Christchurch, where we arrived at 23:00 hours.

For our last night, all the cadets hung out until the early hours and had some good bonding time before we went to bed in preparation for our long day’s travel back to Canada.

––––

January 5, 2010

The second day of hiking was going to be far more difficult than the first. Even though we had no more trees to deal with, the steepness of the hill made it all the more difficult. We were headed towards Dragonfly Peak which is about 2,100 meters above sea level. As we moved closer to the peak the ground got even barer.

A small group of the hikers decided to go for a more challenging route. We scaled up the side of a shear rock face and moved across the top of the ridge. As we passed the rock face we moved to get to the peak. On a small flat near the peak there was a small shack that looked out of place. This shack was the most luxurious shack we have ever seen; big beds, fire place, and even a shower. But to our surprise the shack was owned by a private company that flew guests up to the top and allowed them to stay for awhile. As we were moving on a pair of helicopters came in and landed at the shack and dropped of some guest for the afternoon. Soon enough we had lunch just a little ways away from the peak. As we climbed higher the peak looked more amazing as it showed itself to us. When we reached the top it was photo time with the group. After we finished our photos we moved back down the mountain to base camp for the night. As we settled down we all fell asleep quickly because today’s climb was very tiring.

––––

January 5, 2010: Reece Martina

Waking up at 07:30 hours, our team quickly made breakfast and got their gear ready for the day’s hike to Mt. Brewster’s glaciers and to summit Mt. Armstrong. Putting all our gear we needed for the day into three rucksacks, we started our walk to the glacier first. Along the way, we stopped and played in some snow and shimmied along dangerous rock edges where one wrong step could be fatal.

Eventually, the hard hike paid off and we reached the glacier where we found a beautiful lake to take pictures at. While at the lake, we ate lunch and a couple of the guys decided to go for a swim in the lake filled with icebergs. Our guide thought we were crazy and he had never seen anyone in that lake before.

After we all dried off we walked to the next mountain over and tried to reach the summit, but unfortunately the weather conditions were not favourable and we could not reach the summit safely. We returned to the hut, cooked our dinner and went to bed for the night.

––––

January 4, 2010

Today was the day the big hike started and we had to split into two teams because our group was so large. The first team went to hike to Dragonfly Peak. On the first day we covered so much ground. Although the terrain was flat at first it quickly became vertical. We all felt like we were climbing a large set of stairs to get to the top.

Our guide, Whitney, was the co-owner of the hike company and was taking us to his secret base camp that not many knew about. This camp was about 1,000 meters above sea level and was not easy to find. It was right before the edge of the tree line and was not easy to find at first. When we found the site we quickly set up and had some dinner. When it got dark we all decided to sleep outside under the stars. The stars were magnificent as they twinkled all through the night. The stars put a good ending to our very long first day for hiking.

––––

January 3, 2010

Today was a day that we could go shopping for all those souvenirs that our families wanted. We went to Queenstown and shopped for most of the day. After an eventful morning we were all excited to have the chance to unwind and just relax in the somewhat busy town. As our wallets became lighter we decided to head out to Wanaka where we would meet our hike guides for our three day trip.

As we met the guides we began to assemble our food for the next three days. Some of the things we brought for food were granola bars, pasta, dehydrated meals, cereal, and oatmeal. At dinner time we ate at the Mint Bar Restaurant that was at the bottom of our hostel. It was a Barbeque night with steak and sausage, which were very delicious. As our day came to a close we went to sleep early to make sure we were rested for tomorrow’s activities.

––––

January 2, 2009

Today was a day when we were able to sleep in and get some extra rest for the next couple of days. We started off the morning with some bacon, eggs and toast to make sure that we had the fuel for our hike up Key Summit, which is 928 meters high.

As we arrived at our site for the start of the hike we came across two fair sized birds, called Keas and they seemed to enjoy the spotlight and all the cameras on them. After about ten minutes our guides came to take us up to the summit. We were soon split into two groups and went up so we were about ten minutes apart.

As we walked up with our guides they told us interesting facts about the wildlife and of how we can play tricks on our friends with the plants around us. The plants that they showed us were extremely spicy if you chewed on them. As we made it to the top of the summit the view was breath taking. You could see everything around and we were even above the planes that were flying near us.

We enjoyed a short lunch and moved on to the next point of interest. As we started to descend we headed for a hut down by a river in a valley near the summit. We stopped for tea, coffee, and cookies and had a bit of a rest. Soon after we started out break we were off again and began to walk back down to the parking lot where we started. When we got back to the car park we got together for a group photo and got back into our vans and head back to Te Anau for another night. Before heading to a site for the night we stopped at a wildlife center and looked at some of the natural birds of the country. Finally, we were on to dinner and the officers decided to treat us to a nice oriental meal. We had chicken, deer, lamb, shrimp, rice, and spring rolls. After dinner we had our daily debrief and came back to our rooms and settled down for the night.

––––

January 1, 2010

Our first day of the New Year was set up to be a busy one. We woke up at about 05:30 hrs and packed all our gear up and enjoyed a nice breakfast. We left Te Anau around 06:00 hrs and had a two hour drive to Milford Sound where we would start our day of sea kayaking. Everyone was excited for the chance to go sea kayaking for the first time for most of us.

As we got dressed for the day we got to meet our guides, Ben, Ricky and Jeremy. When we were finally ready to go on the water we launched our kayaks and began our journey. After a bit of awkward moving we all got used to paddling in the kayaks and moved out into the sound. After paddling for about fifteen minutes we got a little history lesson about the fiords that we were travel in.

As we moved we had only sheer ledges to look up to and great water falls coming down the rocky side. We all had to stop for a moment to take the view in. It was amazing the things that we could see all around us and just to think some of us in Canada have never seen anything like this before. On the return, we formed a raft with the kayaks and raisesd some improvised sails and the wind carried us down the sound.

We soon headed in for lunch, which happened to be near a stunning water fall. After we had a bite to eat we all walked up to see the water fall. We took some pictures had some laughs and just enjoyed the scenery. Soon enough it was time to head in and go home. After getting to the shore we thanked our guides for giving us such a great day and gave back all their gear and made our way to our next stop, Gunn’s camp. As we made it there we got our cabins and got settled in. Dinner was sausages and salad, which tasted outstanding. Soon enough we got a little bit of history about Gunn’s camp and we debriefed for the day. After a long day we all settled down and had a good night’s rest, going to sleep to large peals of thunder and a torrential downpour.

––––

December 31, 2009

Today is New Years Eve and we got up at about six in the morning and got a good start on the day. This was our second straight driving day to reach Te Anau for the New Year’s festivities. We arrived at our camp site at about 16:00 hrs and settled in to our rooms and a very large campground.

After getting set up we went to make dinner, which was a fantastic chicken stir fry. After dinner we all got showered and dressed for a night on the town. We went to town around 20:30 hrs and watched a live band and got some souvenirs from various shops. At around 22:30 hrs we went down to the water front to sit and enjoy the view across the lake. This to us all was very breath taking. After our sit on the beach we went to see the bonfire set a blaze. It was about fifteen high and ten feet wide and we decided to do some push ups in front of it to make a great picture. Soon enough we had a crowd watching us and wondering who we were. The New Zealanders were interested in us and were curious abut what we were doing here. After exchanging names with some of the locals we headed to the stage to start the count down for the New Year. We all rang in the New Year together as a family and watched fireworks with each other. As the fireworks ended we headed back to our beds and called it a night because the next day was going to be a busy one.

––––

December 30, 2009

We woke up at six o’clock this morning and packed all of our equipment into our vans. Shortly after we went to a local McDonalds for a healthy breakfast of egg McMuffins and black coffee. We then set off on a long road trip across the beautiful south island of New Zealand taking in the wonderful scenery and looking for geo caches along the way.

Twenty five minutes into our drive we stopped at our first geo cache located in a small town. All sixteen cadets unloaded from the vans and began a frantic search for the geo cache. After ten minutes of looking we were about to turn it in and continue on when the cadet from Yellowknife, Amelia, found the cache hidden in a nearby bush. Finding a cache was a new experience for some people. It was very exhilarating to find this small Tupperware box and add our own objects to it.

We continued our very long drive and took in the stunning scenery, looking at the natural landforms and crystal clear water. Soon we came to our lunch spot the town of Hokatika where we found out they bake some very delicious meat pies and some nice warmers made of possum. Also while there we got our rations at the local supermarket for the next two days and got some shopping done. Soon we moved on and got back to driving our crazy route through the mountains of New Zealand. Then we got to our next stop point, the Tasman Sea where the cadets got some wonderful photos of rolling waves and some inukshuk. Finally after an eight hour day of driving we arrived at our destination of Haast Beach where we unloaded our gear and relaxed.

––––

December 29, 2009

The past two days were our travel days to reach our destination of New Zealand. When we got to the Vancouver International Airport, Sebastian misplaced his passport and had to frantically search for it. After about ten minutes of searching Captain Picard found her passport in the top of her carry-on bag and she was able to move on to the check-in point. This was the first of many mishaps that kept the group entertained and kept our morale up for the whole day.

Soon it was time to board our plane for an awesome 14-hour plane ride on Air New Zealand to Aukland on the north island. On the flight we were greeted by the concierge and he made an announcement to let the whole plane know that we were there. During the flight the concierge handed out some candy bars and some decks of cards for us to play with. Overall we were very impressed with the kindness of the flight crew and how they were interested in what we are doing.

When we touched down in Auckland we had only a short period of time to go through security and make it to our next flight to Christchurch. After an hour and twenty minute flight we were in Christchurch and on our way to customs for an adventure. This adventure included having all our tents searched by the security and also having Amelia’s rucksack lost and sent to Sydney, Australia. After getting that issue resolved we moved to getting our kit and getting out of the airport.

We soon met up with the CO and senior cadet of a New Zealand cadet corps and they took us to get our vans for the expedition. After being taken to the YMCA to stay for the night we got changed and went to the beach. All the cadets went for a bit of an excursion and had a long walk down the beach but our plan soon changed. We had to go to a park and go on a photo-orienteering competition around the city. The champions, Alan, Patrick, Curtis and Dallas, won a chocolate bar each. Soon after it was dinner time where 20 large meat lovers pizzas were ordered and devoured by the Canadian and New Zealand cadets. Immediately after, a debrief took place and we were given the go ahead to go to ground and to prepare for second travel day. Day end 8:30 pm.

––––

August 30: Geoffrey Chandler

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_5jrJZ1qEqjE/SqkZQNXIw3I/AAAAAAAAACA/a25f8DR4XDU/s320/Geoff+Chandler2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379858996126073714" />
Geoffrey Chandler is from RCACC 337 Queens York Rangers in Toronto, ON and is in grade 12.

Course senior today, woke everyone up at 0600 hrs. We were a little slow leaving this morning but we still left before 10 which Rob told me was good. The picture we took at “The Pulpit” seems like an epic shot because of the rising sun in the canyon. Our paddle over to Painted Face was pretty fun and relatively easy; it was especially nice once the sun came out since the morning was a bit nippy! Lunch turned out pretty well (cracker sandwiches, soup and leftover mush). The hike was pretty cool because there were fossils in the rock face which we found out the reason they were there was that a LONG TIME AGO there was this little piece of coral and sediment formed around it. After bits of pressure and seismic activity, the rock where this fossil was tilted 90 degrees to its current state. En route to the biv, we passed a few slumps and a river that had naturally occurring arsenic in it. That was caused by eroded granite leaking into the river. We pulled up to the camp around 530-6, after a solid paddle into the wind. Some of us are planning on waking up at 1 am to see the Northern Light since tomorrow is “Air Force Day” and we get to sleep in until 8 am. All in all, today was a good day and things flowed smoothly. Shame there are only 4 more days!

August 29: Taylor Schenk

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 245px; height: 315px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_5jrJZ1qEqjE/SqkYhk87T8I/AAAAAAAAAB4/nHYdWACTsw4/s320/Taylor+Schenk.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379858195004739522" />
Taylor Schenk is from RCACC 2344 Algonquin Regiment in New Liskeard, Ontario and is in grade 12.

Pretty wicked day today! We didn’t face anything technical on the river but it was nice to paddle with the current. The morning started a little slowly but we hit the river at 9:48 am. We arrived at “The Pulpit” at lunch-ish, stopping once along the way for a urination station/interesting talk on the terrain and rocks. We then after setting up camp took a hike up to the top of “the Pulpit” (the rock beside the Pulpit). After that splendid view we made our way back down to camp. We than took the coldest bath that most of us had taken in our entire lives! But remember, a clean camper is a happy camper. As I write this I am sitting down waiting for our supper to cook and can’t wait and see what tomorrow has in store!

August 28: Jonathan Butt

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_5jrJZ1qEqjE/SqkXxddBtqI/AAAAAAAAABw/F1aVUAUPFZg/s320/Jonathan+Butt.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379857368358172322" />
Jonathan Butt is from RCACC 2590 Herdman in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland and has graduated from high school.

Today was the first day on the river. We had an early wake of 6am this morning for the tear down of the site at Virginia Falls. At around 8:00 am we started the haul of all of our gear to the take off point past the falls. We set up all of the canoes for going through the canyons while we were on the side of the river. We had a beautiful view of the falls which teased us all morning to go down the river. After lunch by the side of the river we finally headed out on the water. There was some amazing scenery going through Canyon 4 and also a bit of excitement. We made it to our end point for the day at this half rocky beach half sand and vegetation island. We set up our biv site ate supper and headed off to bed.

August 27: Blythe Heywood

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_5jrJZ1qEqjE/SqkXF6Yh-_I/AAAAAAAAABo/S2kJAAxUzxQ/s320/Blythe+Heywood2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379856620209699826" />
Blythe Heywood is from RCACC 2705 British Columbia Dragoons in Vernon, BC and has graduated from high school.

0730 woke up, IC today. 10:00 crossed river to hike Sunblood Mountain. 10:12 started. Went from path in trees to narrow shale, back to tree, then rocky and narrow. One persons bag rolled down steep rocky section with water flying out as it went down. Maj Daniel retrieved the bag and Capt Hannan got the top to his water bladder. 4 hrs up, 2 down. At top could see mountains in every direction. Snacked on granola bars because didn’t have time to make lunch. Had proper lunch at 5ish. 6:30 canoed over to portage area just above the falls. Went on tour of Virginia Falls with Scott, the warden here. Portaged canoes 1.2 Km. Had supper as it was getting dark. During night got to about 8 degrees C. Foggy with heavy mist in morning, burned off and not a cloud was in the sky.

August 25: Jordan Stoakes

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_5jrJZ1qEqjE/SqkV1ccGxeI/AAAAAAAAAA0/lodwDnuhP6c/s320/Jordan+Stoakes.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379855237782095330" />
Jordan Stoakes is from RCACC 2799 Queens York Rangers in Aurora and is in grade 11.

Today I was the course senior and we woke up pretty early. All of us had our wetsuits and gear for the water because it was a training day. We dot into the bus and left. At the lake, we learned some new techniques, and had some lunch. The sandwiches we ate were good and we were all very hungry. After lunch we practiced and learned a little more, and left. That night, we went for Chinese. It was great. A 7 hour drive started our journey. Everyone mostly slept with the exceptions of seeing the wild buffalo, ferry crossings, & such. Once we arrived at Fort Simpson we unpacked the bus and then got all the kit organized and ready to be quickly loaded onto the plane. There was about a 2 hour turn around time for the flights. I was on the second flight and when the plane came in it was very exciting. I was trying to get a picture but was yelled at to “get on the plane”. The view from up in the sky was beautiful. This is my first time out west and first time seeing real mountains. The mountains in Nova Scotia are only hills compared to out here. Being on the small twin otter plane made me think of Gary Paulson’s book “The Hatchet”. The pilot took us right over Virginia Falls which was beautiful before landing. Then we set up our biv site and got comfortable. When the last plane in was ready to depart it put on a little bit of a show for us by flying right overhead. That plane flying away was our last sight of civilization for the next week.

August 24: Devon Peters

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_5jrJZ1qEqjE/SqkS6BaR78I/AAAAAAAAAAk/RDMiHhEGltI/s320/Devon+Peters.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379852017891143618" />
Devon Peters participated in the 2009 National Expedition at Nahanni National Park. I was super pumped to get out of the hotel and back on to the water. First we had to do a few things out by the water where we reviewed safety but then we got to go out and try some new stuff. I was a little rusty but the strokes came back to me quickly. Muscle memory is what it is. I like our gear and I think my stay on the river is going to be warm and dry. Tonight we got to meet some local brass as well as our PAO. I really like the idea that our awesome experiences are going to be used to bring other kids in. I think the podcast idea is neat. I’m also definitely going to tell my parents about SPOT which is going to show our location (hopefully) all the way through the trip. Not much more to say about today other than both the Chinese food and the people (local and cadet) are great here. Can’t wait to get on the water!
